7 Things to Love About Japan

A first-timer to Japan, I visited this country with very little expectations and prior knowledge about what I’d discover. My first impressions of Japan led me to find some things to love about Japan and things that made me go, “hmm… dislike.” But Japan is one of those places that you NEED to experience for yourself. And in the end, you’ll probably love it. I strange love, but love nonetheless.

Here’s what I loved about traveling to Japan.

    Japan Owl Cafe Experience

I went to a Japan Owl Cafe. This was my experience.

We all sat at our desks. Laid before us rested a blank sheet of paper, tiny little plastic forcep, and wooden probe.  The teacher went around the classroom to each excited and eager second grader, all of us hopeful for a winner. The super cool science experience for the day? Dissecting an owl pellet.

    The Automotive Detroit Bucket List

Detroit. It’s the “Motor City.” So much of Detroit’s history, successes, and world impact was (literally) driven by the automotive industry.

Ask any native southeast Michigander and I guarantee they have at least one connection to someone who works for the automotive industry. It’s part of the grit and future-forward mentality that makes us Detroiters. We’re kinda in this together.

Hello, North American International Auto Show.

Detroit Auto Show, it’s been awhile.

Souvenir Story: The Yule Lads of Iceland

Meet Bjúgnakrækir. That’s Icelandic for “sausage swiper.”

And this is his mother’s cat, Jolakotturinn (The Yuletide Cat), who enjoys lounging in the sun, sleeping all day, and eating children. Yum.

Every December they emerge from their packaging to sit on my fireplace mantle. He and his cat are among my treasured souvenirs from Iceland.

A Holly Jolly Weekend in Toronto

Last night we put up the Christmas tree while classic holiday songs played over the speaker and our cat Cheddar stretched out in front of the fireplace.

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic. I always do around the holidays.

But instead of pining for my distant childhood memories (get the pun? HA!), I’m thinking about December 2015, when my husband and I made our first married Christmas memories during a weekend in Toronto.

It was a Christmas-themed weekend in Toronto, with ice skating and shopping and delicious food and tours and a date at the Toronto Christmas Market. I made a video of that weekend trip and I never shared it. So now I am.

    Enjoy!

Power Trip: What to do in Boston (when you’re stuck on a work trip)

As a career girl whose goal is to travel the world with a full time job, opportunities to travel can be limited to my paid holidays, vacation days, and personal days.

It’s not like it’s my job to get paid to travel.

Until it is. My employer asked me to attend a conference for work [cue victory dance]. The destination: Boston.

My top priority was work. That was my number one commitment. But I still made it a priority to experience the city, so I did my best to figure out where to eat in Boston and what to do in Boston with limited time while on a work trip.
