Marietta’s Charm is in the Details

I drove home, trying to figure out what it was. You know, it.

The it that summarizes a destination. The it behind the reason people visit.

Some places have stunning natural landscapes with mountains that scrape the sky. Others are home to epic battles where heroes were made. Some places boast towering skyscrapers that wink down to the concrete and steel that shape a bustling city. Big things that define a place. The its of the world.

But as I drove home through the foothills of appalachian Ohio, I stretched my brain to figure out what is Marietta, Ohio’s it? (more…)

7 Things to Love About Japan

A first-timer to Japan, I visited this country with very little expectations and prior knowledge about what I’d discover. My first impressions of Japan led me to find some things to love about Japan and things that made me go, “hmm… dislike.” But Japan is one of those places that you NEED to experience for yourself. • Japan Owl Cafe Experience

    Japan Owl Cafe Experience

I went to a Japan Owl Cafe. This was my experience.

We all sat at our desks. Laid before us rested a blank sheet of paper, tiny little plastic forcep, and wooden probe.  The teacher went around the classroom to each excited and eager second grader, all of us hopeful for a winner. The super cool science experience for the day? Dissecting an owl pellet.

Souvenir Story: The Yule Lads of Iceland

Meet Bjúgnakrækir. That’s Icelandic for “sausage swiper.”

And this is his mother’s cat, Jolakotturinn (The Yuletide Cat), who enjoys lounging in the sun, sleeping all day, and eating children. Yum.

Every December they emerge from their packaging to sit on my fireplace mantle. He and his cat are among my treasured souvenirs from Iceland.

Power Trip: What to do in Boston (when you’re stuck on a work trip)

As a career girl whose goal is to travel the world with a full time job, opportunities to travel can be limited to my paid holidays, vacation days, and personal days.

It’s not like it’s my job to get paid to travel.

Until it is. My employer asked me to attend a conference for work [cue victory dance]. The destination: Boston.

My top priority was work. That was my number one commitment. But I still made it a priority to experience the city, so I did my best to figure out where to eat in Boston and what to do in Boston with limited time while on a work trip.

Admitting My Truth & Introducing a Rebrand

You may have noticed a change. An aesthetic change. A name change. A change from UnrestingSea to The World Incorporated. To introduce this change, it’s time to share the truth.

    The truth?

Well, I think the truth is that with UnrestingSea, I’d been living a lie. From my blog, you may have had the false impression that I’m bouncing around the globe. I’m not. The truth? I’m a travel blogger with a full-time job. I’m a part-time traveler. I’m a career woman. Travel is NOT my entire life, though it’s a very important facet of it.

I’m the average American: I work the 9-5 grind and plot ways to maximize vacation days.

When it’s worth being crazy to travel

    “You’re crazy.”

That’s what they told me. “They” being nearly everyone I encountered and shared my plan with.

The plan: Work all day Friday. Come home to a family party hosted at my house. Leave around midnight to drive 311 miles from Metro Detroit to Chicago, solo.

  • In Search of the Secret Ice Cave

In Search of the Secret Ice Cave

In Search of the Secret Ice Cave

    Silence.

We’re standing on the edge of Fjallsárlón. It’s a glacier lagoon adjacent to it’s more famous counterpart, Jökulsárlón.

It’s different, however. The water is murky brown like chocolate milk. Too opaque to peer through, the lake allows the meandering tourist to wonder what monsters may lurk below. This is Iceland, after all. The icebergs are stark white, piercing through the chocolate milk surface. And the starkest difference between it’s sister lagoon? Fjallsárlón is completely devoid of people.
