Incorporating Travel

Admitting My Truth & Introducing a Rebrand

You may have noticed a change. An aesthetic change. A name change. A change from UnrestingSea to The World Incorporated. To introduce this change, it’s time to share the truth.

The truth?

Well, I think the truth is that with UnrestingSea, I’d been living a lie. From my blog, you may have had the false impression that I’m bouncing around the globe. I’m not. The truth? I’m a travel blogger with a full-time job. I’m a part-time traveler. I’m a career woman. Travel is NOT my entire life, though it’s a very important facet of it.

I’m the average American: I work the 9-5 grind and plot ways to maximize vacation days.

It’s interesting — I originally named this blog UnrestingSea because the poem it originated from was all about growth. And now I’ve outgrown UnrestingSea.

For a long time, I believed the traditional travel blogging narrative – sell your possessions, quit your job, see the world. I wanted that destiny. I yearned for that life. I thought that was just what you do as a travel blogger. I believed that the only true way to see the world was to quit your job to travel.

And I didn’t fit that mold. I didn’t want people to know that I had a job to fund my travel habit (silly, right?). I wanted blog readers to think that I had a voice of authority in travel despite being chained by my limited vacation days.

Still, I dreamed that I could get to that full-time travel status, but between “waiting for it all to happen” some other things happened:

I met my forever human. We got a cat. We tied the knot.

We’re happy homeowners.

I love having a career and climbed the corporate ladder way faster than I ever anticipated.

Amand and Eric wedding.

Hello, forever human.

And now that I’m rockin’ it with the career goals I hoped to achieve when I was studying away in university, I no longer dream of quitting my job to travel the world.

I dream of achieving my career aspirations while fulfilling my travel inspirations.

That’s my truth and I’m now reflecting it in my blog.

I am a travel blogger with a full-time job.  I didn’t want to admit that truth because I thought confessing my desire to have both was travel blogging suicide. Who wants to read a TRAVEL blog by someone who spends more time commuting to work per year vs. actually traveling the world?

Well, I think a lot of people want to.

Think about it – there are way more people in the world who can relate to wanting to incorporate more travel into the life they worked so hard to build, than turning away from their life to see the world. The average person would love to travel more, but isn’t ready to sell it all and leap into a world of uncertainty and insecurity. It takes a special kind of someone to do that and that’s not me.

That’s not a lot of people I know.

Plus, travel burnout. After a few years on the road you’ll probably want to come home and be a cat lady for a while. I just got a head start on that.

Now there’s nothing wrong with that lifestyle, it’s just not the path I chose. It doesn’t align with my life preferences.

I like growing professionally in Metro Detroit and building my network. I like having a ‘homebase’ and a place where I can use my energies to make impactful change in a company and community. I like my cat. If I were traveling full-time, how could I nurture my friendships and relationships? How could I establish myself professionally in Metro Detroit? How could I join boards or leadership groups? How could I attend family bbqs and celebrations?

I’m not going to quit my job to travel the world. I’m going to use my job to fund my travels. I’m going to maximize my vacation days as much as possible. I’m going to travel with purpose.  I’m going to go on trips worth experiencing instead of wandering wherever the wind blows me. I’m going to design a life where my working world and traveling world coexist and thrive.
